Touring Longhorn Cavern State Park
Planned by Paul Goldfine
Join us for a tour of Longhorn Caverns State Park. Walk the same ground as a mastodon! Longhorn Cavern is special among Texas show caves because of how it was formed and what happened here. From a nightclub to a fallout shelter, your tour guide will share the exciting adventures and mysteries that took place underground. We have two reservations and can accommodate up to 80 people.
The day will start at the Y in Oak Hill. The meeting time is 9:00 AM, with a driver's meeting at 9:15, and a departure time of 9:30. Depending on the number of attendees, we may split into two groups. We'll start out heading west on US-290, turn onto Fitzhugh Rd, and make a rest stop at the Sunoco in Johnson City shortly before 10:30. After the stop, we'll head north on US-281 for a short time before turning onto RM-1323. From there, we'll take Althaus-Davis Rd to Kingsland and then to the park.
We should arrive just before noon. This will give us time to collect our tickets, grab a bite at the snack bar, visit the gift shop, and attend a safety briefing. If you miss any part of the safety briefing, you will have to wait for the next available tour, and they may be booked for hours. The first group will enter at 12:45 and the second at 1:00. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes.
